Kashmir Woodcrafts
Kashmir is the only part of India where the Walnut tree grows. Only the fruit-bearing species is used, as the non fruit-bearing species has none of the beauty of Walnut wood. Walnut wood is almost black, and the grain is much more pronounced in the root-ball and trunk. Its colour, grain and inherent sheen give Walnut it’s unique and distinctive decorative look. The carving that is done on this wood is of a very superior quality.

Each piece is hand made and hand carved, using traditional tools and centuries old skills. Carving is the demonstration of the carvers’ skill, and Walnut is eminently suitable for this being both soft as well as one of the strongest varieties of wood. Only solid wood is used, where possible we use the root-ball of the Walnut tree, which gives it its distinctive decorative look that would enhance any home. This traditional wood has been used for centuries to make goods suitable for the homes and lifestyles of Mughal Emperors to today’s rich and famous in modern India.
The intrinsic value of the wood from each part of the tree differs; the root being the most expensive, and the branches having the lowest price. When a dealer buys a whole tree and leaves it to season, a part of his capital becomes blocked for that period, and this will naturally be reflected in the cost of that product. On the other hand, cheaper products are liable to warp, crack or shrink.
